We're excited to announce that Highline Beta is partnering with the General's Lab Innovation Program (GLIP), an Ontario-wide student innovation accelerator for the construction and technology industry.
GLIP is an industry initiative developed through the OGCA (Ontario General Contractors Association) Innovation Committee, led by American Global's Innovation & Insights team, and supported by a group of leading general contractors, industry partners, mentors, and post-secondary students. We want to thank American Global for bringing us into the program. They saw the alignment early, and they were right.
Here's what makes GLIP different. Students from colleges and universities across Ontario aren't working on abstract case studies. They form teams, pick a real challenge submitted by an OGCA member or industry leader, and work alongside mentors who are actually facing those problems in the field. The result is practical, relevant ideas that can be tested, refined, and potentially carried forward.
That's exactly the kind of work we love.
GLIP is built around three things: developing the next generation of construction leaders, building a stronger bridge between students and industry, and helping contractors explore new ways to solve business, operational, risk, and technology challenges. All three sit right in the middle of what we do at Highline Beta.
We've spent years building and funding new ventures with corporate partners. A lot of that work looks like GLIP at its core: take a real problem, put the right people around it, and figure out whether there's something worth building. We're big believers in corporate collaboration as a way to turn good ideas into real companies. GLIP is that belief applied to students and the construction ecosystem.
Construction isn't new territory for us either. We were selected by CMHC as a Scaling Hub partner to help tackle Canada's housing crisis, working to support and scale the startups taking on one of the country's hardest problems. And through our venture studio, we invested in Conkoa, a voice-first, multilingual messaging app built specifically for construction and powered by AI. We know how much opportunity is sitting inside this industry, and how much value gets unlocked when you pair operators who understand the problems with builders who can move fast.
As part of the partnership, Highline Beta will support the top teams from the GLIP Final Showcase with venture-building mentorship and strategic guidance.
The first-place team gets three months of mentorship and advisory support from our team, including guidance on venture development, market validation, business model design, and the next steps toward commercialization. The second and third-place teams each get two dedicated mentorship and feedback sessions with us.
The goal is simple. Give these teams direct access to people who have actually launched and scaled companies, so they can sharpen, validate, and present their ideas well beyond the final showcase. A great idea at a student competition is a starting point, not a finish line. We want to help these teams figure out what comes next.
What gets us most excited about GLIP is the way it links everything together: student entrepreneurs, universities and colleges, construction leaders, and people who build ventures for a living. Those groups don't collaborate nearly as often as they should.
The people involved in GLIP include heads of innovation and senior leaders from large, multi-billion-dollar construction companies who are seriously thinking about new business models, internal ventures, and the future of their industry. Many of them are entrepreneurial themselves. Getting them in a room with ambitious students working on real problems is how new ideas actually get going.
We're proud to be part of it. Thank you to American Global, the OGCA, and the entire GLIP community for the invitation. We can't wait to meet the teams.
